Since April 2011 the University of California Berkeley radio club, W6BB, runs a monthly emergency communication net.
The net takes place each FIRST WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH (AT NOON) immediately after the siren tests on the UC Berkeley campus.
There will be two net check-ins:
1) On repeater WA2UNP: 440.9+ Mhz, PL 131.8 Hz
2) On the Cal Bears 2m calling frequency: 146.430 Mhz simplex
Please program these two channels into your radio and make it a habit to have an operational radio with you at all times.

We encourage all licensed radio amateurs in the Berkeley area (on and off campus) to participate.

Net control will be the first station receiving a response from a second station.
In the future we might introduce a different rotating system for net control to give practice opportunities to all the regularly participating hams.

Greetings W6BBers…wish I had more of an opportunity to be and active participant in the club. Unfortunately I am traveling way too much for work.

At any rate, I am looking for someone to take on the following task, for which I will pay you well. I have a 2 ele SteppIR yagi on the flat roof of my house. It is on a pushup mast and has been in place for 6 or 7 years. It’s time to take it down and clean it up–once the rains are over…and also add the 30/40m dipole that is available. As you probably know SteppIRs are fairly complex antennas, so I am look for someone familiar with these antennas to do the hard work…as I said I will pay handsomely for someone to take on the maintenance and installation task. So, if you think you might be up for the task–ready to tackle it on your own mostly–please contact me offline and I we can talk about it. Tnx and 73, Elliott N6PF (email: emedrich@mprinc.com).

This evening between 5pm and 6pm Pacific (0100-0200 UTC) the W6BB Amateur Radio Club here at the University of California Berkeley will be on HF for the first time in a VERY long time. We will be operating QRP starting on 20m on or near 14.060MHz. if things are good at that time (it’s grey line for us at that hour) we’ll stay put unless things are just dead in which case we’ll slide down to 40m around 7.040MHz.

This demo will be showing how to set up a small (ATS-3B and modified MP-1 antenna) QRP station and get it on the air and make contacts.

Look for us (W6BB) around 0100-0200UTC (probably closer to 0130 to start and probably as late as 0300 if conditions are good and you all want to help us out). Spots would be MUCH appreciated. Feel free to pass this on to other hams, especially Cal alumni/emeritus/retired.

WHERE: 60 Barrows Hall (this is where we’ll meet but then go to the adjacent practice field on the east side of Barrows Hall)

WHEN: 5pm Pacific until fun stops, November 18, 2010

Bring a jacket and a sense of humor.

Here the finalized dates of events leading up to the UCB emergency exercise:

1) Monday, May 10th 6-6:30PM – NALCO (Northern ALameda COunty) ARES/RACES ‘training’ scheduled for fire patrol
Cedar street Alternate Emergency Operations Center (AEOC). For more information: http://www.pdarrl.org/ebsec/nalco/

(This meeting is specifically for city of Berkeley Fire Patrol training and is of only very limited value for other emergency events. Nevertheless, any/all training is valuable and NALCO is happy to accommodate anyone interested in participating.)

2) Thursday, May 27: 6pm – Discussion of emergency communication support using amateur radio: local procedures and protocols
508-20 Evans Hall (Seminar room of the Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience)

This discussion is specially arranged for the campus community amateurs who wish to be involved in any local amateur radio emergency communication operations, including the UC Berkeley campus.

The discussion will include an introductory description of procedures, protocols, frequencies and facilities for local emergency communications including the UC Campus, Berkeley, Albany as well as Tang and Alta Bates/Herrick/Summit hospitals.

Note that this is just an *introduction* to help UC hams become familiar with what is available and how it all functions in this specific local environment. The information will be necessary and hopefully sufficient to permit active involvement in the amateur radio communicationportion of the UCB emergency exercise on June 17th.

The discussion will be led by Mal Raff who has participated in UCB emergency exercises for many years, including 2009. In addition, he has been involved in amateur emergency communication for over 40 years and in the Berkeley area for over 30 years, having been a founding member (and presently EC/RO) of NALCO (Northern ALameda COunty) ARES/RACES. He has been an active participant in W6BB activities since he was a grad student at UCB in the early 1970’s.

3) Thursday, June 17th, 2010: 8am-11.30am – Annual emergency exercise at UC Berkeley
Location and other details will be announced through the W6BB mailing list.

Members of W6BB are explicitly asked to participate in the event. If you are interested in participating actively in emergency communication, please attend one of the preparatory meetings. You can also participate as an observer which does not require any preparation.

Please forward this mail to any radio amateurs on campus who might not be on the W6BB mailing list. (To sign up for the W6BB mailing list go to http://www.w6bb.org/, click CONTACT and follow the instructions under “W6BB mailing list”)
